Spring Detox: Dry Skin Brushing

Detox Dry Skin Brushing Naturopathic Doctor Denver ColoradoOne of the very first things I like to recommend for detoxing is Dry Skin Brushing. It’s suitable for practically everyone and the benefits start almost immediately.

The way that Dry Skin Brushing works is that it activates your lymph system which is located just under your skin. You can think of lymph as a liquid that slowly moves throughout your body gathering up unwanted materials (like viruses, bacteria, damaged cells, waste and even cancer cells). There is no pump to move your lymph (like your heart which moves your blood), but there are a few things that you can do that help the lymph to flow more easily. In addition to moving out waste, lymph movement also helps white blood cells (your immune system!), fat soluble vitamins, and hormones get delivered to tissues.

Dry Skin Brushing also exfoliates off dead skin cells and allows your sweat glands clear access to getting rid of toxins from your body. As a lovely bonus, it makes your skin feel silky smooth.

My favorite time to dry skin brush is in the morning before dressing or showering. It has a subtle enlivening effect, especially if you add a few drops of certain essential oils like lemon or rosemary.

A firm-bristled brush is important. I think that Yerba Prima is a good brand and makes quality brushes. For a good explanation about dry skin brushing, check out this post by Wellness MamaAlso, Ashley’s Green Life has a short video about how to do dry skin brushing here:
